Religious Cult Groups
In addition to Christianity and Islam, the traditional African religions play an important role in Ghana, even if their believers belong to a minority today. In the Greater Accra Region, the Kpele cult is of particular importance. I have been studying, documenting, and photographing the numerous festivals and complex rituals of the Kpele cult groups since 2006. Through all these years, I have developed a close relationship with many of their priests and priestesses, as well as with many priests and priestesses of other cult groups like the Tigare, Otu, Akong, or Mra. It is a great privilege that they allow me to attend many of their rituals, and I am very grateful that they let me see every year a little bit more of their very rich and beautiful spiritual life.
