Powerful Market Women

Ghanaian market women are powerful traders who dominate the market scene. Many of these women travel long distances every week to reach them. Some travel from Accra to northern Ghana and back. Young women from the north also work as head porters, known as kayayei, in coastal towns and villages. They often carry incredibly heavy loads, particularly in the yam, fish and cloth markets.
I am continuing to explore the various markets in and around Accra. The appearance of each market depends on what is sold there: fruit and vegetables, fish, yams or cloths.
