The Ghana Coffin DancersDuring the lockdowns of the Covid 19 pandemic, videos of the Ghanaian Coffin Dancers went viral on social media. With the slogan “Stay at home or dance with us” Nana Otafrija, the founder of the pallbearers, gave hope to people all over the world.
But Nana Otafrija and his Coffin Dancers had already been performing long before they became famous in 2020 during the pandemic. I met and photographed them on many occasions between 2015 and 2020 all over the Greater Accra and the Volta Region.
Otafrija started his dancing business with the idea to convey pure joy of life at funerals and to encourage the mourners not to cry, but to celebrate and dance with him. So with his performances he invites people to celebrate life instead of crying about their loss.
