The Ghana Coffin Dancers
During the lockdowns of the 2020–21 global pandemic, videos of the Ghanaian coffin dancers became extremely popular on social media. Nana Otafrija, an undertaker and the founder of this group of pallbearers, offered hope to people worldwide with his slogan: 'Stay at home or dance with us'.However, Nana Otafrija and his coffin dancers had been performing long before they became famous during the pandemic.
I photographed them many times between 2015 and 2021, in various locations across the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions. And to this day, the Coffin Dancers continue to cause a stir with their amazing funeral performances.
Through his dancing, Nana Otafrija encourages mourners to celebrate life, inviting them to dance with him rather than mourn their loss and cry.
